Nokia Lumia 525 press image makes the rounds on Facebook

http://kantepur.blogspot.com/2013/10/energy-drink-funny-sexy-commercial.html
After getting spotted in China’s mobile certification agency, the upcoming Nokia Lumia 525 made another appearance. This time around, a press image of the handset made the rounds on Facebook.

The press image reveals that Nokia Lumia 525 will sport a visibly sleeker profile than its predecessor. Three color options are shown – red, yellow, and white.

Previously known as Nokia Glee, the Lumia 525 is said to be a minor update over the wildly popular Lumia 520. The device is rumored to be announced before the end of the year.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 makes its way to AT&T for $199 on contract

AT&T has begun accepting preorders for the Nokia Lumia 1520, asking $199 for it if you sign a contract. Without contract, the device will set you back $549.

The Lumia 1520 was announced last month at Nokia World 2013, marking the company's first venture into the realm of 6-inch smart devices, with an international price tag of €700 unsubsidized.

AT&T has exclusivity on the Lumia 1520 in the US, following similar exclusivity agreements regarding the Lumia 900, 920, and 1020. Preorders are scheduled to ship on November 15, with available color combinations including black, white, yellow, and red.

Samsung to ship 100M Notes and Galaxy's in 2013, refocus software

Samsung's heads held a conference call with investors and gave interesting insight into the company's near future. For example, Lee Sang-hoon, President and CFO, thinks the industry is shifting from a hardware race into a software one.

This has been evidenced by Samsung's strive for more and more software features, especially on its flagship products. The company has established overseas R&D centers and hired more software engineers.

This increased complexity leads to more patent disputes, Mr. Lee says "we have increased our efforts to continuously improve our competitive edge and reduce global dispute risks in patents".

JK Shin, joint-CEO of Samsung and head of the mobile division, said Galaxy Note shipments are expected to reach a massive 100 million units by the end of this year.

Shin sees huge potential for growth in the smartphone business where penetration is just 21%. LTE will be a major driver for growth, with 4G tech expected to be on around half of all smartphones by 2017 going by Samsung's forecasts.

Curiously, no Tizen or Windows Phone devices were mentioned.

Read Wall Street Journal's liveblog of the conference call for more details.

Android 4.4 ROM for the T-Mobile US Motorola Moto X on XDA

http://kantepur.blogspot.com/2013/11/samsung-galaxy-grand-duos-vs-galaxy-s4.html?utm_source=BP_recent
Just a few days ago Motorola was among the first to announce it will update its most recent phones (Moto X included) to Android 4.4 KitKat. The schedule is yet to be revealed, but the first leaked Android 4.4 ROM for T-Mobile's Moto X is now available for download.

The KitKat ROM popped up on XDA Developers yesterday and seems to be a dump from a developer edition of Moto X. It is stable enough for work though there are some bugs and features that still have issues. You should carefully read the thread before installing the ROM.

You'll need an unlocked bootloader in order to install the KitKat ROM. And the update may - and probably will - cause you to lose your root access. Hit the source link below for download links and installation instructions.

Meanwhile, there are rumors that Motorola will include T-Mobile USA this Friday into the Moto Maker website and its subscribers will be able to make their own custom design of the device. Right now the Moto X is available only in SIM-free option and only in black and white flavors through Motorola.

A quarter of a billion smart phones ship in Q3 2013

Over a quarter of a billion smart phones shipped worldwide in Q3 2013 as the market grew 44% year-on-year. The top two vendors, Samsung and Apple, maintained their positions, with market shares of 34% and 15% respectively. Huawei, Lenovo and LG completed the top five.

Shipments of large-screen smart phones, 5" and above, reached their highest ever level, accounting for 22% of shipments or 56 million units. This trend continues to be driven mainly by Samsung, which dominates the large-screen segment. Breaking this down further, 66% of the 56 million smart phones had a 5" display, 31% had screens between 5" and 6", while just 3% had 6" or larger screens.

‘The 6"-plus segment will be boosted next quarter by Nokia’s arrival, but this market won’t develop quickly unless Samsung invests marketing dollars to push its Galaxy Mega range,’ said Jingwen Wang, Research Analyst. Over the next year, Asia Pacific is expected to continue to lead the demand for large-screen smart phones due to the nature of emerging markets there. Low PC and home broadband penetration, a high level of mobile network use, and low Wi-Fi network penetration in these countries limit the presence and functionality of Wi-Fi tablets. At the same time, many consumers in these countries are price-sensitive, so domestic vendors have been successful with affordable large-screen smart phones – a phenomenon that is less visible in other regions. Worldwide, though, Canalys expects smart phones with screens between 4.1" and 5" will be most popular with consumers in 2014 as they offer the best balance between portability and legibility.

At a regional level, Greater China (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan) again grew the most, by 64%, with nearly 100 million units shipping. Greater China now accounts for 39% of the global market. Latin America had the second highest growth rate, at 59%, though it is the smallest region, with 19 million units shipping.

‘There is an interesting disparity among the leading vendors across the regions,’ said Nicole Peng, Research Director, China. ‘Samsung was the leading vendor across all regions except North America, where Apple held the top spot. These two vendors account for almost 70% of the market there. LG held onto third place in North America, while Nokia has moved from eighth to fourth place after making gains from its competitors with its new flagship products, the Lumia 1020 and 925.’

‘In Greater China, local vendors Lenovo, Yulong and Huawei followed Samsung. Apple moved back into the top five this quarter, ahead of Xiaomi and ZTE, which shows the success of its strategy to finally prioritize China as one of the initial launch countries for its new products.’

After Greater China, the second largest region was Europe, the Middle East and Africa, where 56 million units shipped, representing year-on-year growth of 22%. Here, Samsung leads with nearly a 50% share, while Apple follows far behind with 13%. Sony, Nokia and LG retained their positions.

Sony also took third place in Asia Pacific (excluding Greater China), driven by its home market, Japan. Indian vendor Micromax then followed, also thanks to its domestic shipments.

Apple trails in Latin America, where it has only a 5% share and is in seventh place. Here, LG, with 10%, falls far behind Samsung; TCL-Alcatel makes an appearance in third place, followed by Nokia and Huawei.

In terms of platforms, the Android and iOS shares were static sequentially, but Microsoft increased its share of the market to 4%. It increased its shipments by 185% to 9.2 million units against Q3 2012, which helped to place it as the second biggest OS in 19 countries, most notably Finland, with a 39% share; Vietnam, with 16%; Italy, with 15%; Thailand, with 11%; Turkey, with 11%; and Russia, with 8%. ‘Nokia’s new Lumia handsets will help shore up this position in the holiday quarter, but Microsoft and Nokia must ensure that momentum is kept up well into the New Year as the acquisition goes through to completion,’ said Jessica Kwee, Singapore-based Analyst. ‘In this quarter we also saw the rise of alternative OSs, with more Firefox OS units shipping, but also an upsurge for Linux in China as Aliyun signed up more than 20 small domestic vendors, offering quad-core smart phones ranging from US$100 to US$300 in China.’

Apple tops US smartphone OEMs while Android still leads

The latest comScore report for the three month period ending in in September has Apple solidifying its role as the number one smartphone OEM in the US with a 0.7 point increase to 40.6%. Samsung also enjoyed its own 1.2 point increase over the previous quarter to 24.9%. This comes at the expense of HTC and Motorola, who suffered 1.4 and 0.4 point losses, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Android and iOS dominance of smartphone market continued as both combine for some 92.4% of the overall pie, a combined 0.5 point increase over the previous three month period. This came mostly at the expense of the death spiral that is BlackBerry's market share, who has suffered another decrease and now controls just 3.8% of the market.

Microsoft's Windows Phone OS is slowly climbing its way into third place, which is obviously a ways away from the other two. Nevertheless, WP's growth is starting to show ever-so-slight hints of gaining momentum, as the latest report reveals that it's become the second largest mobile OS in some 19 countries, including Finland, Vietnam, Italy, Thailand, Turkey, and Russia.

In Q3 2013 over a quarter of a billion smartphones shipped worldwide, which is a year-over-year growth of 44%. With such a huge number of devices making their way into the pockets of so many people globally, even a miniscule-looking market shares can equate to humongous profits

LG G Flex hits Korea on November 12

http://kantepur.blogspot.com/2013/11/samsung-galaxy-grand-duos-vs-galaxy-s4.html
LG has unveiled the official release date of the G Flex curved smartphone for Korea - November 12. Its major rival - Samsung Galaxy Round is already available though in extremely limited quantities.

The LG G Flex is different from the Galaxy Round - it comes with a truly flexible body, screen and even a curved battery. It is powered by the same Snapdragon 800 chipset but comes with a lower resolution display, 720p.

Anyway, what's more important is the LG G Flex will make it to the international markets unlike the Galaxy Round, which will most probably remain a Korea exclusive. LG promises to release the G Flex in Europe, USA and China "as soon as possible". While this is not exactly the answer we've hoped for, it still sounds promising.

Future Samsung devices will pack house-made CPUs, 560ppi displays

Samsung’s mobile devices will feature house-made CPU core and displays with 560ppi in the near future. The word arrived during today's conference call, where the company’s executive team spoke about what lies ahead.

The move of CPU core production in house will be a particularly important shift for Samsung, as currently, the company’s chipsets feature CPU cores licensed from ARM. It will be accomplished in two-steps – Samsung will first develop 64-bit cores based on ARM designs and then move to its own.

Mobile displays were another hot topic of conversation during the analyst event. Next year, Samsung will out RGB AMOLED displays with a pixel density of 560ppi. Combined with the targeted WQHD resolution (2,560 x 1,440 pixels), the aforementioned pixel density points at a display with a 5.25” diagonal coming our way (quite adequate for a Samsung Galaxy S5 we’d say).

Furthermore, Samsung will out mobile devices with 4K displays in 2015. With a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, those screens will represent a huge leap compared to the 1080p units which are in fashion today.
